Treat 2.1 as a candidate, then test your brief.
Google describes improvements to text, layout and consistency in 2.1. That makes it worth evaluating for dense designs and iterative edits. It does not make every existing Nano Banana 2 workflow obsolete.
This guide combines published sources. VSModels has not run its own live model benchmark. Studio images are illustrative samples.

Image generation and image editing are different evaluations. A preference leaderboard is useful background, but it does not guarantee accurate text, an unchanged product label or faithful edits.
Look at generation and editing separately.
The Oct 9 research snapshot favored 2.1 on both boards. Nano Banana 2 and Pro had overlapping uncertainty intervals on the editing board; that is a reason to avoid declaring a clear winner for every edit.

The Oct 7 board labeled 2.1 preliminary. Search-enabled Nano Banana 2 and 2K Pro entries use different configurations. Read those conditions before treating the order as a like-for-like comparison.

*2.1 uses token billing. These short-prompt, single-image samples are not a maximum charge. Thinking, reference images and search can change the bill.
A two-model comparison uses two outputs. Add both sides when budgeting. The proposed credit packages are a planning preview; live generation and purchases are not open.

Product photos
Use the same product and lighting brief. Check shape, material, label spelling and details that should stay unchanged.
Text & layouts
Supply exact copy. Check every word, hierarchy and spacing. A beautiful layout can still contain incorrect text.
Complex scenes
Count objects and verify spatial instructions. Repeat the prompt and keep failures, not just your favorite image.
Record the endpoint, ratio, resolution, references and search/thinking settings. Compare at the same scale. If the settings cannot match, explain the difference.
