Nano Banana
vs Midjourney

Conversational edits, a distinctive look, and two very different ways to pay.
A version-aware guide to choosing your image workflow.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Choose the workflow before the winner.

Start by evaluating Nano Banana 2.1 when you need conversational revisions, multiple reference images or a metered API workflow. Evaluate Midjourney V8.2 when a repeatable visual style, Personalization and an integrated creative workspace matter more. These recommendations follow the documented tools; they are not results from a VSModels quality test.

01 / KNOW THE VERSIONS

“Nano Banana” can mean several models.

This guide uses Google’s October 2026 Nano Banana 2.1 documentation and Midjourney’s current V8.2 documentation. Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana Pro and 2.1 are distinct models. A comparison of the original 2025 Nano Banana cannot establish how 2.1 performs today.

Google lists 131,072 input tokens, 32,768 output tokens and 1K/2K/4K image output for 2.1. Midjourney made V8.2 the default on July 24, 2026. Vendor capability descriptions do not measure accuracy on your brief.

02 / EDITING & STYLE

Both edit images. Their controls differ.

Google documents conversational editing, up to 14 reference images and consistency limits of four characters and ten objects. These are supported workflow limits, not guarantees that every face, logo or object stays unchanged. Its image guide also warns that generated image counts and rendered text can miss instructions.

Midjourney’s Edit Model accepts written changes, combines up to four reference images, and supports local editing and canvas expansion. It works with V8.1 and V8.2. Older advice that Midjourney cannot edit an existing image is no longer an adequate description.

For visual style, Midjourney separates Style References from content references. Style weight changes their influence; Personalization captures aesthetic preferences. This is a reason to evaluate it for a series with a defined look, rather than proof that its images are universally more attractive.

03 / COMPARE THE BILL

Metered outputs versus a subscription.

Other request chargesInput $1.50 / 1M tokens; text/thinking output $7.50 / 1MMonthly Basic / Standard / Pro / Mega: $10 / $30 / $60 / $120
Different purchase termsBatch uses a separate, lower rate scheduleAnnual totals: $96 / $288 / $576 / $1,152, paid upfront
Plan featuresSearch can add chargesRelax images: Standard and above; Stealth: Pro and Mega

Compare the cost of an accepted final image: include failed attempts and revisions. A subscription’s unused time also has a cost. The same dollar spend does not buy matched settings, latency or quality. These vendor prices are separate from VSModels credit packages.

Google Standard API · image output only$3.36100 × $0.0336 / image

A partial cost estimate, not a quote: excludes input/reference tokens, text/thinking output, search, retries and taxes. The 4K rate is calculated from 3,780 tokens × $30 / 1M; Google rounds it to $0.113. No model call is made. Midjourney’s subscription buys GPU time and features, so this does not calculate equivalent output quality or images per plan.

04 / THE REVIEW NOTEBOOK

Check what each comparison actually ran.

VENDOR POSITIONING · JULY 24, 2026

V8.2 emphasizes aesthetics and Personalization.

Midjourney’s launch announcement describes improved image quality and a better fit to personal taste. It supplies no controlled score against Nano Banana 2.1. Treat this as the maker’s intended direction.

HISTORICAL HANDS-ON REVIEW · SEPTEMBER 12, 2025

Nine prompts show task-dependent preferences.

Tom’s Guide preferred the original Nano Banana on several instruction-following examples and Midjourney for fantasy scenes and everyday realism.

A reviewer’s small, subjective 2025 comparison. It predates both current versions and cannot rank 2.1 against V8.2.

COMMUNITY EXAMPLE · AUGUST 2026 · DISPUTED PROVENANCE

A short-prompt showcase is not a benchmark.

A Reddit author reported comparing V8.2, Nano Banana Pro and GPT Image 2 through an aggregator. Replies challenge whether the Midjourney label reflects genuine access. We exclude its outputs from quality conclusions; it also tests Pro, not 2.1.

05 / MAKE THE COMPARISON USEFUL

Test the job you need to finish.

01 / SUGGESTED CHECK

Product revisions

Check the same product across edits: label spelling, geometry, material and unwanted changes. Count how many attempts reach acceptance.

02 / SUGGESTED CHECK

A visual campaign

Choose a style reference and produce several scenes. Compare consistency, not just the strongest single image.

03 / SUGGESTED CHECK

Text-heavy designs

Use exact copy, a fixed layout and the same output size. Check every character and line break; repair text in a design tool when needed.

04 / SUGGESTED CHECK

Budget and delivery

Record provider, model version, settings, queue time and every rejected output. Compare total spend per accepted asset.

This is a suggested evaluation plan. It has not been executed by VSModels. Keep settings visible and preserve failures so the comparison can be repeated.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you choose.

Is Nano Banana cheaper than Midjourney?

It depends on volume, revisions, resolution and which access path you use. The API output component can be inexpensive for occasional use; a subscription may fit regular creative work. The calculator excludes part of the Google bill and does not predict equivalent Midjourney output.

Can Midjourney edit my own image?

Yes. Its current Edit Model supports instructions, references and targeted edits. Verify version compatibility in its documentation.

Which is better for realistic images or accurate text?

The reviewed evidence does not establish a current universal winner. Test your exact brief on the named versions. Older reviews and disputed aggregator examples cannot settle this question.
